Nissan Debuts Murano Hybrid at Auto Shanghai 2015

In what may be seen as a “duh” moment, Nissan introduced a hybrid version of the very popular Murano mid-sized SUV.  Using Auto Shanghai 2015 as a backdrop may be seen as an nod to Chinese environmental sensitivities; or that the vehicle wasn’t ready for NYIAS or the Chicago Auto Show.

Whatever the reason, a mid-sized hybrid SUV/crossover has been a smart idea for the past 8 years.  It is still peculiar that no one has really embraced it.  Ford Escape hybrid–small.  Toyota Highlander Hybrid–a little big, but worthy.  I think those two are the only ones of note.  Until now.

Murano Hybrid is equipped with the new supercharged QR25DER gasoline engine and an electric motor paired with a compact Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery efficiently controlled by the Nissan Intelligent Dual Clutch System (one motor/two clutch parallel system) which assists a torque with good response at low speed and a supercharger that can generate a high output power with excellent acceleration. It delivers a powerful driving performance equivalent to V6-3.5L engine and offer superior fuel economy similar to the 2.0L engine.

Looks, space, performance, economy.  That’s all we need, right?  Well… according to Nissan:

Murano has the comfort and luxury for which it’s earned numerous accolades through the years. It offers bold and exciting exterior design with energetic styling, as well as an upscale, stimulating and spacious interior.

We forgot comfort and luxury.  Looks like Nissan didn’t.  The Murano Hybrid goes on sale in China Summer 2015.  Nissan didn’t say whether the US market will get the model.  I’d be shocked if it didn’t come here as a 2016 model.
