The New Hyundai Tuscon: Watch a VP Call it ‘Phat’–And He’s Right!

To describe the look of the new Tuscon, Jochen Sengpiehl, Vice President Marketing at Hyundai Motor Europe borrowed a phrase from his daughter:

“Phat”.

Usually old guys quoting the kids is kind of…funny.  If you look at the video and images in this post, I can understand his enthusiasm.  Take a look at the old one:

Compare it to the new one:

To me, there are 2 things that immediately stand out.  The first is the strength of the new grille.  The opening in the old version was tiny, and looks kind of rodent-ish.  Sorry.  Another reason I loved the idea of the fuel cell Tuscon, but didn’t want to own one.

The second feature that popped out to me was the wheelbase.  The old Tuscon had a little “salmon-belly” going on in that area. It looked curved and a little bloated. That has been replaced by stronger looks at the belt line, as well as along the base of the door.

The Hyundai CDO describes it thusly:

“…The All-New Tucson has a bold and athletic presence achieved through refined, flowing surfaces, bold proportions, sharp lines and most importantly, our newest generation hexagonal grille – our brand signature,” said Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Design Officer at Hyundai Motor Group.

A bit fancier than my take, but he gets paid very well for really fancy words.

The new Tuscon begins in Europe, and will eventually end up here in the States.  This Tuscon will be green as well.  It has the makings for a significantly better looking fuel cell vehicle than the Mirai.
