Cars to See at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show: Chevy Colorado ZR-2 Concept

We discussed this turbo diesel powered, rugged and fast Chevrolet concept small pickup here.  But you can see it up close and in person at this year’s Chicago Auto Show.  The ZR-2 was originally introduced at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

As I’ve said in the past, this is what I like about it:

I like the new 2.8-liter four cylinder turbo diesel.  A 2.8 liter four.  Otherwise known as a big-ass four cylinder engine.

Others will like the improved off-road capability, thanks to better shocks, integrated skid plates, flip-out tow hooks and a built-in winch.

I like that the new Duramax diesel generates 181 horsepower and 369 lb/ft of torque.  And the 6-speed automatic transmission.

Although this is a little larger than Hyundai’s Santa Cruz urban crossover pickup concept, you can see a trend developing.  With today’s “light duty” pickups at the same size as full-size pickups of the 90’s, there is a hole once filled by Ford Ranger, Mazda B-series, and Chevy S-10.  So automakers are plugging it with vehicles positioned as “urban” yet “outdoors-y”.

Either works for me.  And if you’re in the market for a new “urban” pickup, you can see the Chevy Colorado ZR-2 Concept at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show.
