2015 Chicago Auto Show, Day 1: Thoughts and Images
Today was the “Concept & Technology Garage” at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. Held in a smaller hall somewhere in western McCormick Place, the venue was a cavernous as it was set apart from the rest of the show. I know, because I think I lost 4 pounds walking to get there.
But once there, it was “on” as the kids say. There was a lot technology, as Hyundai brought the BlueDrive Tuscon SUV, Chevy brought the newly restyled 2016 Volt, and Nissan brought a Leaf with the coolest paint job ever. There were a lot of cool vehicles, including the Spongebob-themed Toyota Siena. But, there wasn’t much in the way of concepts. The concepts were busy being mounted on platforms in the main rooms.
As I said, there were some cool vehicles. The Jeep Renegade is a hot little compact SUV. The Mopar trimmed version (see slideshow above) was really eye-catching. If you want it, just make sure you get the power roofs. Otherwise you’ll get a 21st Century version of a Targa top. As we all know, it was cool to take the tops off, until we forgot it was going to rain.
I was happy to see the Fiat 500X, fresh off it’s Super Bowl commercial. Really liked the not-quite-all-flat paint job. It does sit a little higher, ala the Volvo Cross Country. Although I wouldn’t take it off road, I’d feel comfy taking it through some prime Chicago snow and ice.
There were a few others of note, but I won’t get into them now. Pretty sure I’ll do separate pieces on each of them before the show is over.
I’ll be live tweeting, posting and streaming during the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. Our Chicago Auto Show Social Media Hub is the one page where you can find it all.
