Mystery Solved: Kia to Introduce the Trail’ster Compact SUV Concept at 2015 Chicago Auto Show
Not too long ago, we were alerted to the possibility of an off-road version of the Kia Soul EV, or maybe a new electric SUV design by Kia. Or something else just to get us wondering.
Well the wondering is over. A few days ago, Kia sent us this:
Aligning form and function to conceive a uniquely compelling vehicle for the city-dweller-turned- outdoor-adventurer, Kia Motors America will take the wraps off the rugged Trail’ster e-AWD concept at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. With its bold design, fully retractable canvas roof and smartly integrated rear electric all-wheel drive system, the turbocharged Trail’ster takes Kia’s iconic Soul to a new level of expression, efficiency and capability. The Kia Trail’ster concept will be unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show on Thursday, February 12, at 9 a.m. CT.
First, we’ll be there to live stream the unveiling of the Kia Trail’ster eAWD concept for you. Make sure you bookmark our HECN CAS Social Media Hub page.
Second, here’s the twist. It has front-wheel-drive with an integrated rear AWD system. So it’s not actually an EV, it simply uses an EV transmission unit to supply drive to 2 of the 4 wheels in AWD.
Wait. Is that what they just said? “Integrated rear electric all wheel drive system” means the AWD is in the rear? Does that mean there is a motor for each wheel but they’re all in the back? Or there’s a motor for each axle, again all in the back?
I don’t know, and apparently they’re still being coy.
They call it eAWD. Which is fine, at least to me. I’m sure if it rolls out proper, the marketing folks will have something better.
But “Trail’ster”? Kind of “preten’sious”….Click here for reuse options!
