2014 Paris Motor Show Preview: Infiniti’s New Luxury Concept
Infiniti presents Q80 Inspiration: Infiniti’s vision of category-breaking, supreme luxurious driving – a top-of-the-line, four-seat fastback that rises above the crowd. It’s an audacious and elegant step forward for Infiniti as a global player designed to shake up the status quo in the premium large four-door club – a no-compromise ambassador of driver-centric powertrain and onboard technologies.
At 15:30 local time on October 2 in Hall 5 of the Parc des Expositions de Versailles in Paris, Infiniti will introduce the progressive Q80 Inspiration to the media and provide a glimpse into its high-performance and efficient hybrid-electric powertrain implementation as well as additional technologies.
Nissan owns Infiniti and is the leading seller of electric cars, with only one model, the Leaf. For years there’s been a buzz about a second model, something to rival Tesla . In January, Nissan’s global design chief Shiro Nakamura talked about a 3-prong plan for the future of their EV program. He said their future includes the Leaf (naturally), a sportier model, and “a cheap city-commuter type EV”.
Some would say that’s the Leaf.
In 2011, there was word about the ESFLOW concept car. This was to be the sporty Tesla competitor Nakamura mentioned. The ESFLOW is sporty AND an EV. And pretty good looking, if you ask me.
Meanwhile, Tesla has stolen all of the limelight as well as a lot of oxygen in the EV sector. So will this new Q80 Inspiration be the platform for the new Tesla-killer? 30% yes, 70% no is my take. Nissan has made some sweeping changes to their battery production, leaving them with some excess inventory. Actually a lot of excess inventory. So a gasoline hybrid is as practical for buyers as it is for Nissan’s accountants.
