Watch out VW Golf, the Audi A3 Sportback TDI is Coming

Our friends from Autoweek report that Audi is bringing the A3 Sportback TDI to our shores for the 2015 model year.  The video above is a walk around from AutoMotoTube.

I checked it out, and it’s true.  According to Audi USA, the diesel hot hatchback will be part of the 2015 US lineup.  Why?  Aren’t there enough hot hatches out there?

Yes there are.  But there aren’t enough luxury hot hatchbacks.  For some that may mean excess.  To me it means that I don’t have to settle if I like heated seats, a premium stereo, and the other things that come standard in a luxury marque.

Nothing against the average hot hatch, but they’re kind of sparse. And they were meant to be that way.  Think the VW Rabbit GTI if you’re an American from back in the day.  Seat, wheel, engine, and safety harness.  You needed the harness, because the GTI could go fast, turn quick and bring a smile to your face.

As the hatch segment has grown and become more refined, expensive and a little bloated.  These days hatches are basically built for teens with rich parents or twenty-somethings in their first good job.  These new premium hatches kicks up the class and price warfare.  There’s not much I can find on pricing, but the competition for the Audi A3 Sportback is rich.  It will join the BMW M35i ($62k), and Mercedes’ A45AMG ($74k), as a premium car for your elegant and lead-footed wife, mistress, or mister.  Gas2 believes it will enter the market in the mid $30’s.  If so, it’s a bargain that you should immediately buy.
